I’m making a big leap today.
Here at My Home Brewed Coffee, I’m all about, well… coffee! No surprise there.
And while I’ve only written about coffee on this site, I do in fact enjoy tea and drink it quite often.
Pretty much every day, actually.
I mean, it’s good to broaden our horizons.
While coffee and tea are very different, they are like cousins in some ways.
They both are both warm beverages that contain caffeine and have certain health properties, they both taste earthy and natural.
And today I want to talk about not just any tea, but one of my very favorite types of tea.
There are some great things about it, and some of them are that it tastes really nice and earthy, and it has some great health benefits.
It even has a funny name: Oolong tea.
Let’s take a look at this tea, its health benefits, and even an amazing deal on it!
What Is Oolong Tea?
When it comes to tea there are a few most popular types: green tea, black tea, herbal tea.
There are plenty of other kinds, like white tea and oolong.
And of course, oolong is the one we’re looking at today.
So what exactly is it, anyway?
Oolong is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, which is the same plant used to make black tea and green tea, and it’s a traditional Chinese tea. But the difference is in how the tea is processed.
In short, this tea is kind of “in between” green tea and black tea.
What I mean is that green tea is made with fresh tea leaves that haven’t had oxidation, which is what happens when the leaves are exposed to air.
Black tea, on the other hand, is made when the tea leaves are fully crushed to give more exposure to air and enhance the oxidation.
And finally, oolong tea is made when the tea leaves are only slightly bruised, not fully crushed, and wilted in the sun to create a partial oxidation.
So again, it’s not minimally oxidized like green tea, but they’re not more fully oxidized like black tea; it’s in the middle of the two.
And if you’ve drank a lot of tea, and know the taste of green and black tea pretty well, you can maybe recognize that oolong tea is an “in between” tea when you give it a try.
It’s a delicious and unique taste, in my opinion.
The Health Benefits
First off, let’s talk caffeine.
A cup of green tea has about 29 grams of caffeine, oolong tea has about 38, and a cup of black tea contains about 47 grams of caffeine.
There are different antioxidants in oolong tea, known as tea polyphenols, and some of the main ones are theaflavins, thearubigins, and EGCG.
These give this tea many of its health benefits.
Oolong tea also has L-theanine, which is an amino acid also present in green tea that’s been shown to have positive effects on cognitive performance and relaxation.
Aside from all these, it contains several vitamins and minerals.
Here are some of the amazing health benefits of oolong tea:
- Good for heart health
- Aids weight loss
- Improves brain function
- Helps protect against certain cancers
- Promotes tooth and bone strength
- Helps relieve eczema
- Helps protect against diabetes
- Supports the immune system
These are some of the great things about drinking it.

But, as with any other healthy or nutrient-packed food or drink, it’s good to remember that oolong tea isn’t a cure all, and it doesn’t necessarily make a huge impact the moment you take a sip.
But if you drink it consistently, in the long run it will help with all these things and more.

The Taste
This won’t be nearly as thorough as my coffee reviews, which are very detailed because coffee just has a nice deep profile and spectrum of taste and elements to it.
Tea is a little more hollow when it comes to taste.
It hardly has any body to it at all, the aftertaste is exactly like the main taste, etc.
But oolong tea definitely has a distinct flavor that I just honestly love!
The aroma is nice and toasty! It’s like toasted grains and certainly an earthy, floral aroma.
And again, as I’ve mentioned in the title of this article and other places, the taste is just really earthy!
But when coffee tastes earthy, it’s like more of a deep, full flavor.
The kind of earthy that oolong yields is more light, almost more floral or grassy I’d say.
But this taste is certainly refreshing, at least to me.
It’s a little more robust than green tea, but still has a light, refreshing profile.
My Recommendation
I’ve tried different brands of oolong tea, and they can taste different for sure, but there’s not a major taste difference usually.
There are so many brands you can choose from, but oolong tea can be a bit hard to find in the grocery store sometimes, unless it’s more of a health store you shop at.
But not only is this brand that I recommend a delicious oolong tea, and it’s the best deal you can find, it’s also a great company that donates to charitable organizations and great causes, including founding an orphanage in China.
If you search on Amazon for oolong tea, there are a few brands that sell 100 tea bags for about $15.
And that’s a pretty good deal.
But, this brand that I’ll recommend to you sells 200 bags of oolong tea for $15!
That’s an insanely good deal!
I very highly recommend this brand, even if you’re looking to get green tea or another kind of tea.
With such a good deal on delicious, high quality oolong tea, you can’t go wrong!

Conclusion
Oolong tea is not only a great tea in and of itself because of its great taste and its awesome health benefits, but if you happen to be a coffee drinker who wants a caffeine kick in the afternoon that’s not as “jittery” as coffee and maybe a bit more healthy, it’s a wonderful option for you.
That’s partially the reason why I love drinking it.
But there are many other reasons why not just oolong tea, but any tea, is a great choice for a hot beverage.
It’s a super healthy tea that’s in between green tea and black tea in its oxidation and production and taste, it’s a delicious, earthy tasting tea that’s refreshing, and a great option for pretty much anyone.
One last thing that I love about the oolong tea that I’ve recommended to you is that it’s a real Chinese oolong tea, and every box that they make is inspected by a Chinese tea master.
So in every box there is a little tag that says, “Inspector: [name]”.
I really appreciate this!
It’s so nice to know that your tea is really authentic.
I hope that if you’ve never tried it and you give it a go, that you enjoy it as much as I do, and that you’ll notice its benefits for your health!
And with that… tea cheers!
