There was a time, when I was working many hours a week doing window screen repairs, where I didn’t have much time on the job to brew coffee, so I resorted to these wonderful tasty treats for my caffeine kick.
They’re just that good.
So let’s talk more about them, a great deal to purchase them… and how to make your own at home!
Chocolate Covered Goodness
They’re also called chocolate covered espresso beans, but whether they’re coffee or espresso beans, it doesn’t matter so much.
The bottom line is that they are coffee beans which are coated with a good layer of either milk or dark chocolate, and they’re delicious. Just that simple.
If you’ve never tasted them, what happens is you bite your way through a nice little layer of chocolate down to the coffee bean.
The coffee bean is crunchy and crispy in texture, with a strong taste of coffee that perfectly compliments the sweet chocolate on the outside.
I remember the first time I ever tried them…
I used to go to a coffee shop called Vinaka Coffee Shop in California, where I’m from.
They had a little gumball machine filled with chocolate covered espresso beans and if you put a quarter in, you could get a handful.
When I first saw them I was like what!? Coffee beans covered with chocolate!?
I don’t even know if it sounded very good to me.
But alas, it was love at first bite.
You can find different kinds of them at certain grocery stores across the US, or at coffee shops, but if you’re looking for a great deal online so they can be delivered right to your door, I have a deal for you on an awesome brand!

How To Make Your Own
Homemade is usually always better, right?
If you’re looking to make your own, you’ve come to the right place.
Let’s start with the ingredients…
- 100-gram chocolate bar
- 1/3 cup coffee beans
- A microwave or double boiler, and a microwave-safe bowl
- Measuring cup
- A fork
- Baking tray lined with parchment paper
- A separate bowl or jar
It’s a good idea to have quality ingredients, because that way you’ll get the most out of the whole “homemade” thing!
I love to make good quality and great tasting food at home.
So now that you have all the ingredients, let’s get started, step-by-step!
Step 1 – Melt The Chocolate
Bring the water in the double boiler or saucepan to a boil, then reduce it down to a simmer and then break the chocolate into chunks, and put it to the bowl of the double boiler.
Keep stirring the chocolate until it’s a smooth, fondue-like texture.
Step 2 – Chocolate Coat The Coffee Beans
This is a fun one.
Remove the chocolate from the heat when it’s the right texture, pour in the coffee beans into the chocolate bowl, and stir.
You’ll want to keep an eye on them to make sure that they are well covered with chocolate and that none of them are stuck together.
After you’re done, wait just a few minutes to let the chocolate cool so it can thicken just a bit.
Step 3 – Separate The Beans
Take the fork and lift out the beans from the chocolate individually onto your baking tray with baking paper, letting any excess chocolate drip off.
This step will be tedious, although it’s necessary to make great chocolate covered coffee beans.
If you can’t take all of them out at one time and you come back and the chocolate cools, no worries!
You can simply bring water to a simmer again and put the chocolate over it again for a few seconds, letting it just barely melt.
Step 4 – Let The Beans Cool Down
When the chocolate is firm enough for you to lift them off the baking tray, put them into a bowl or jar, put them into the fridge for at least an hour.
After an hour, take them out and enjoy them!
And there you have it, chocolate covered espresso beans made with love!
In Conclusion
Whether you make them homemade with lots of love, or you simply love eating some store bought ones, they are wonderful, life-giving sweet treats either way.
The bitter coffee beans mixed with chocolate, whether milk or dark chocolate, is a nearly perfect combination.
And remember, if you’re in a position where you can’t make coffee during the day at work like I was when I was working with window screens, these are seriously the perfect solution!
Just like with any chocolate snack, you might not be able to eat too many at a time, but you’ll notice that sweet caffeine kick even if you have just five or 10 of them.
I hope this article was helpful, please let me know if you have any questions or comments and I’ll be happy to hear from you.
And I hope you thoroughly enjoy your coffee beans!
